History of Blaine

From frontier settlement to Minnesota's sports capital

The City of Blaine, Minnesota has evolved from rural hunting grounds to become one of the state's most dynamic suburban communities. Phillip Laddy, a native of Ireland, is recognized as Blaine's first settler when he arrived in 1862 near the lake that now bears his misspelled name, Laddie Lake.

The area remained sparsely populated due to sandy soils and abundant wetlands that discouraged farming. In 1877, Blaine separated from Anoka and organized as a township. That year, Moses Ripley was elected as the first Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. Ripley, who came from Maine, persuaded his fellow board members to name the township in honor of James G. Blaine, a U.S. Senator and three-time presidential candidate from Maine.

Blaine's transformation began after World War II when starter home developments emerged in the southern part of town. The development of Interstate 35W and Highways 10 and 65 dramatically improved accessibility to the Twin Cities, spurring unprecedented growth from just 1,694 residents in 1950 to over 75,000 today.
