History of New Brighton

From Dakota settlements to thriving suburban community

The City of New Brighton, Minnesota has a rich heritage dating back centuries. In the mid-18th century, Mdewakanton Dakota tribes lived in the vicinity of New Brighton's marshy lakes, harvesting wild rice and establishing villages near Long Lake at Rice Creek.

Immigrants from Britain and France settled a small village in 1858 that included a general store, school, and mission church. As railroads expanded in the area, millers in Minneapolis formed the Minneapolis Stockyards and Packing Company in 1888, involving prominent figures such as streetcar magnate Thomas Lowry, flour millers John Sargent Pillsbury, Senator William D. Washburn, ex-Minneapolis Mayor W.H. Eustis, and industrialist W.H. Dunwoody.

The village was officially incorporated on January 20, 1891, and named after Brighton, Massachusetts. Each August, the city celebrates this heritage with Stockyard Days, a beloved community festival at Long Lake Park featuring live music, parades, and community activities that honor New Brighton's agricultural and industrial roots.
